The “yazoo lands” refers to areas on georgia’s frontier. after the revolutionary war, these were lands far from georgia's mostly population, and much of it was located in what is now alabama and . in order to protect the settlers that did live there, in georgia governor george matthews signed the yazoo act, giving the government the authority to sell land to private companies at a very discounted price. however, these companies had very close ties to many in georgia politics, so when they re-sold the lands a highly prices, many people suspected something illegal was going on. furious georgia voters caused many legislators to flee the state. when a new general assembly met in , the act was repealed, but later- in the supreme court ruled that the repeal of the law was unconstitutional. the “yazoo land fraud”- as it became known- finally came to an end in 1814 when purchased the land.
