In the late 19th - early 20th centuries, significant changes took place in the economies of the most developed countries of the world, as a result of which many theories created in the era of classical capitalism of free competition became untenable. Homogeneous, relatively small producers were replaced by the largest companies, increasingly acquiring a monopolistic form. Production began to acquire a mass character, which brought to the fore the problem of selling manufactured products.
