The perspective of Hinton Helper over slavery is quite different than George Fitzhugh´s one. According to H. Helper, slavery was a setback which prevented the development and economical growth of the slave-holder regions, in this case, the South.

The ideas of Hinton Helper on the South were developed in the book The Impending Crisis of the South.

On the other hand, Fitzhugh considered that slavery was necessary to civilize and maintain economical support and order of African-American people. He was a pro-slavery intellectual and he wrote books like Sociology of the South and Cannibals All!

He also thought that slavery was beyond ratial classification even advocating for capturing and training "yankees" as slaves.
