Why did greek culture spread so rapidly across the mediterranean sea and the black sea?

This process can be called Greek Colonialism. People who left the great Greek cities (banished, fled because of war, etc.) often founded new settlements in the Mediterranean. Proximity to sea also led to the development of commerce, trade, which helps the export of culture even to the Black Sea region.
