Two months after the japanese attack on pearl harbor, president franklin roosevelt (1933–45) issued an executive order for the evacuation of all 110,000 people of japanese ancestry who resided west of the rocky mountains and their placement in relocation camps. congress ratified the president's order, and in 1944 the supreme court endorsed it in ruling that the authority for relocation was within the war power of the united states.
