One of the 'big ideas' of chapter 3 of the textbook revolves around how the desire for wealth and power was a driving force behind european and chinese exploration around the globe. traditionally, china has always been very guarded in its approach to foreign trade and interaction (at least up until the last 60 years or so), as you learned in section 2 of chapter 3. however, for a brief period from 1405-1433, china, under emperor yonglo and admiral zheng he, embarked on a series of seven massive sea voyages across the indian ocean to gain tribute and reestablish chinese power after being subjugated by the mongols for the previous 150 years.
