Why did europeans call the bubonic plague the black death?

The "Black Death" was a global epidemic of bubonic plague that affected Europe and Asia in the mid-1300s. People who were infected showed several horrible symptoms: they were covered in black boils, and these oozed blood and pus. The black boils that people got on their skin was the reason why this disease was named the "Black Death." Over the next few years, the disease killed almost one-third of the European population.
