The Puritans created a theocracy. A theocracy is a government in which religious leaders also rule the government and serve as the judicial, legislative, and executive branch of a community. The Puritans were extremely religious, therefore they felt that religious leaders should govern their people.

Another example of a theocracy occurred during the Protestant Reformation in Geneva, Switzerland. John Calvin, a Protestant who amassed a large following, was invited to govern the town and also be its religious leader. The town adopted Calvinism, and laws and major decisions were decided by Calvin and other religious leaders.
