The emergence of trade unionism is linked to the context of the industrialization and consolidation of capitalism in Europe from the eighteenth century, when the Industrial Revolution occurred. The era was marked by the poor living and working conditions to which a large part of the European population was subjected.

Social relations at that time reached an enormous polarization, with society divided into two great classes: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. It is at this moment that the antagonism of interests between them becomes evident.

Over time, workers began to organize themselves as a means of confronting employers and questioning the situation at the time. The first signs of union between workers appear with the breakdown of factory machines as a form of resistance, a movement known as Luddism. The motivation was the view of the workers that they would be being replaced by the machinery in the industries.

Later, in 1824, the English Parliament passed a law extending free association to the workers, something which was once only permitted to the ruling social classes. With this, the trade unions, trade union organizations equivalent to the current unions begin to be created.

The trade unions then negotiate on behalf of the group of workers, unifying the struggle in the search for greater rights and wages. The idea was to prevent employers from putting pressure on individual workers.

Other measures of the trade unions were wage fixing for the whole category, including regulating it in terms of profit (thus increasing industrial productivity also resulted in an increase in workers' wages), creating aid funds for workers at times difficulties of meeting the categories of a region in a single federation.
