I'd like to correct one myth which people often believe, i.e, Sharia in Arabic means “the way,” and does not refer to a body of law. It is the result of human intellectual activity and is therefore, by definition, fallible and changeable.

The defensive theory of jihad has a clear basis in the Qur'an. On this theory, the use of force is allowed only in self-defence (if the life and existence of the Muslim Community is in danger); defending Muslims who are oppressed but unable to defend themselves; and using force to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.

The term has gained additional attention in recent decades through its use by various insurgent Islamic extremist, militant Islamist, and terrorist individuals and organizations whose ideology is based on the "misinterpreted notion" of jihad.
