Why was Korea Divided?
When the Japanese empire was dismantled at the end of World War Two, Korea fell victim to the Cold War. It was divided into two spheres of influence along the 38th parallel. The Americans controlled south of the line - the Russians installed a communist regime in the north, later ceding influence to China.
What happened to Korea once it was divided?
The North part became North Korea and the South part becamse South Korea. People that was in North Korea at the time of war, or the people that used to live in the South Part of Korea got stuck in the North Korea part, they could only see they're siblings once more in their lifetime.
Why does the U.S. feel they are the winner of the Korean War?
They helped the Koreans fight the war and they were the ones that said, "let's split Korea in half. While very little territory actually changed hands and the war technically froze in a status quo ante bellum (essentially a draw), U.S./U.N. forces managed to successfully defend the Republic of Korea, preserve its status as an independent capitalist state and effectively stem the tide of Communist expansionism not to mention that the modern-day R.O.K. is now a global economic powerhouse with one of the most dominant military forces in Asia as well as the world with extensive political and diplomatic soft power that has global reach (a worthy investment indeed I might add) in addition to having the world's sole political, economic and military superpower as an ally. North Korea, on the other hand, was practically bombed back to the Stone Age and has been reduced to little more than a hopelessly impoverished, completely isolated hermit state that struggles routinely just to feed their own people whilst China failed to accomplish any of its strategic goals despite atrociously horrendous losses (i.e. scoring a decisive victory over U.S./U.N. forces that would force them to withdraw from the Korean Peninsula completely) and is now stuck with a supposed “ally and buffer state” that constantly defies China, makes a point of rejecting Chinese authority and embarrasses China on a steady basis. Fun Fact: official D.P.R.K. history makes a point of completely omitting China's contributions in regards to saving the D.P.R.K. from complete annihilation and outright downplaying China's role in the Korean War to one of an absolute auxiliary lackey that did virtually nothing in the war.
