African american leaders have responded to racial discrimination in the united states in a variety of ways. compare and contrast the goals and strategies of african american leaders in the 1890s –1920s with the goals and strategies of african american leaders in the 1950s –1960s.

1890-1920's

Booker T.

(1881) Washington who rose out of slavery supported the strategy of gradualism which thus gained him a lot of support from the white peoples.

W.E.B Du Bois

(1910) Only African American of the five activists who formed the NAACP in 1910; NAACP officer and  editor of The Crisis (NAACP journal).

Ida B. Wells-Barnett

(1889) Fought for rights through journalism. Activism triggered by personal experience with the segregated Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in  1884 and the lawsuit she brought against the railroad in her hometown of Memphis, TN.  In 1889 became co-owner and operator of the newspaper Free Speech and Headlight.

1950-1960's

Civil rights movement was a struggle for social justice that took place mainly during the 1950s and 1960s. Civil Rights Act was passed in 1957

Jim Crow Laws were granted  in the 14 Amendment (1868) during Reconstruction which equal protection under the law. Following this was the 15 Amendment (1870) gave black's the right to vote.

The Civil War emerged due to tensions between the North and the South on the issue of whether to abolish or continue slavery

WWI in illustrated the racial discrimination in the war led to the Great Migration of African Americans to the North to take advantage of economic and social opportunities

biological/genetic factors means they were born or predisposed to have something. nothing can really change it, and you can't really do much to "fix" it. it isn't something learned

these are the biological factors:

adrian is relatively tall and he is on the basketball team

(adrian can't ever stop being tall or force himself to be tall. likely one or both of his parents are tall as well and they passed on the tall gene. he probably does basketball because he is tall)

the rest are environmental/cultural factors. these are things that are taught to us. for example, cynthia wasn't born saving pocket money, her family most likely taught her this (environmental factor)
