In the nineteenth century, people put their ears to a railroad track to get an early warning of an approaching train. why did this work?

The vibrations and sound waves from the train would travel up the railroad tracks ahead of the train. When a person put their ear on the track, it would receve the signals from the vibrations and sound waves.
