In the walk, they mostly walked barefooted, and were chained to each other. During the walk to the Indian territory, they mostly encountered starvation, thirst, and no help from the government. They weren't supplied any food, or other supplies to help them through the journey, which caused thousands of deaths in the journey, and only a few survived. This showed that the government didn't care for the people. That's why it's known as the "Trail of Tears" and "Death."
