Why do you think slave owners prevented slaves from gathering in large groups

Opinion : Because they knew that if slaves gathered together they would be able to fight for their liberty and they could kill the slave-owners. Like an slave rebellion.

They kept them from learning to read and write too.

They probably think that with slaves gathering in groups they can help each other out and some might have a lot of information, to help them all escape and they have a better chance to do so.
