The Kansas Nebraska Act was one of the most controversial laws passed by the US Congress. This law dealt with the issue of whether or not slavery would exist when Kansas and Nebraska applied for statehood. Previously, the institution of slavery in new states was determined by the Compromise of 1820 (also known as the Missouri Compromise).
