The cult of personality of Mao Zedong in China resulted in huge support of the Cultural Revolution. Most of the people in China were just following what Mao propagated, without questioning it, or thinking about its consequences. The reason for that was that Mao gradually became a leader that was considered perfect, divine even, and that was due to the constant propaganda by the Communist Party which brainwashed the people. The situation was in many ways similar to what is happening in North Korea in the past few decades.

The Cultural Revolution's purpose was that Mao manages to strengthen his position, status, and support in the country even more, and so it did, as his popularity until his death was at an incredibly high level in China.
