Andrew Carnegie was born on November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland, but his family moved to the United States in 1848. He was a self-made steel tycoon and one of the wealthiest businessmen of the 19th century, who later dedicated his life to philanthropic endeavors. Unequivocally one of  America's first captains of industry.

He was a philanthropist who donated more than $56 million to build 2,509 libraries around the world, many of which are still serving their communities today. By the time Carnegie died in 1919, he had given away more than $350 million, almost 90 percent of his entire wealth to charity.
