An abolitionist person would  travel to the south over and over again to free slaves.

The Quakers were the first organized group that helped slaves to become free. Besides, these religious people who were also considered abolitionists, designed routes for slaves to escape and provided shelter to stay safe.  Another religious group which helped fugitive slaves was the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In addition, the Underground Railroad which was a network of African American as well as white people, offered shelter and aid to escaped slaves from the South.
