      One major reason why the US wanted to sign the Adams-Onis treaty was because it ceded Florida to the United States and asserted that the Sabine River was the border between the U.S. and New Spain.

         The Adams-Onis Treaty also known as the Florida Purchase Treaty was signed in the year 1819. It was a treaty between the United States and Spain  that ceded Florida to the U.S. and established that the Sabine River was the boundary between the U.S. and New Spain.

      It ended  the border dispute between the two Nations and was considered in certain quarters as  a triumph of American diplomacy.

       The state of Florida had become burdensome to Spain and the Spanish government could no longer control it properly and hence they decided to cede it to the US in other to help settle the boarder dispute at the Sabine River.
