When he wrote his diary, during the winter of 1777-1778, with his experiences and observations, the American troops had suffered several setbacks, and, after having been defeated at Philadelphia, Washington decided to establish an improvised camp at the strategic, yet extremely harsh, location of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
