Land was inexpensive and even available, so that many Texans farmed or raised cattle on their own land instead of working for another person. The main activity in farmers lives was the growing of food crops, such as oats, sweet potatoes and wheat, which constituted a major part of their diet. But, it is important to highlight that only few farmers made profit from those food crops. They also produced cotton to be shipped to Europe. In addition to this activities, they also focused on raising livestock, such as milk cows, and chickens to provide food and make profit.
