Could the fighting over slavery have been peacefully resolved? why or why not?

Yes. Perhaps given more time and leaders such as those that led Congress through the early mid 1800s political compromise could occur. Economics could force slavery to end on it's own in time

No. The difference were so great that only a war could force the south to end slavery

congress was not thoroughly prohibiting states from funding religious schools.
