Note that the author is Frederick Douglass with the usage of "I". Remember that before he was able to escape, Douglass was a slave. On arriving on free soil (the North), he was a free man, which meant that he had rights, which includes the right to be treated like a human (Note: "the though of owning a pair of trousers was great indeed). This shows his own experiences, or "personal". Writing this out to explain the process to the public is the "narrative".
