Hammurabi's code was written because King Hammurabi's expansion in power and territory demanded a unification of the groups he controlled. To achieve this, a universal set of laws was needed, so he gathered his kingdom's existing laws through his legal experts. Such laws were revised and changed or removed, and a final list of 282 laws was compiled.

Hammurabi's code differ from laws today in different ways. Some examples include:

Hammurabi's code required the accuser to bring the accused to court by himself. Nowadays the accused is legally required to show up in court, if he does not comply with the rules, police forces are responsible for taking him.During Hammurabi's time, theft was punishable with death. Nowadays, a thieve's punishment is to pay a fine or serve time in jail.In the case of assault, Hammurabi's code stated that "If a man break another man’s bone, they shall break his bone." In present time, the agressor is likely to serve time in jail.

Hammurabi's code is based on revenge: "An eye for an eye" .

After the Exodus from Egypt, Israel wrote the Ten Commandments. These were written to set ethical and worship principles, and play a key role in Judaism and Christianity.

The 10 Commandments are moral laws under which America's present law was produced. The main difference between both is that the 10 Commandments are not constitutional, since they go against the most significant right in the Constitution: the right to belive in whatever one chooses.
