At a gathering with Signal Corp Communications Officer Lieutenant Colonel James E. Jones, Johnston portrayed how a code dependent on Navajo would upset adversary code breakers. Jones was suspicious however Johnston convinced him to test the reason.

Re translated into English, the Navajo message precisely summarized the request as given, astounding the Marine observers.
