The Peace of Augsburg impermanent settlement, marked by Charles V in 1555, finished the Thirty Years' War, which was an arrangement of wars between German Lutherans and Catholics in the divided Holy Roman Empire somewhere in the range of 1618 and 1648.  

The settlement permitted sovereigns in the Holy Roman Empire to pick which religion would win in their areas: either Lutheranism or Catholicism.
