Augusta city became a temporary capital at times during the American Revolution.   Augusta served as the capital from 17th August 1781, to 4th May 1782.  The town served as the temporary state capital as the Georgia assembly prepared for the British evacuation of Savannah. By this time, the tide of war had changed in favor of the American forces, and by July 1782, the British had evacuated Savannah.
