The Mediterranean Sea as we know it in the present didn't even existed several tens of millions of years ago. In this part of the world existed an ocean called Tethys, and what is now the Mediterranean Sea was actually the westernmost part of this ocean. As the continents were moving, Tethys started to gradually disappear, with Africa blocking the western part of it, and India moving in the middle of it until it reached Eurasia, giving birth to numerous seas and the India Ocean. The part that was separated between Eurasia and Africa created the Mediterranean Sea, which is actually just a small remnant of the vast ocean that once existed.
