The railroads: With the construction of new railroads connecting the east  with the west,  citizens could move to the West not only as temporary  travelers, but also to set there based on the opportinities available in the great plains and far west.The Gold Rush: This is more a reason to go to far west, especially  to California. The discovery of gold mines in far west ecouraged people to go there and bet on becoming rich finding gold.The land: The huge amount of land was a great motivation to farmers who saw in the great plains chances to increase their crops; they also saw the opportinity to get property of land extensions and then sell them to the highest biddeer.
