Amid the confusion, the "do not shoot" order issued by Captain Preston was heard. One of the soldiers, the soldier of first Hugh Montgomery, fell to the ground due to a blow, which took to him to shoot "accidentally" to the air his musket. (Later, though, he would admit that he deliberately shot the crowd.) The other soldiers panicked and started firing at the crowd. Five people died, the three settlers Samuel Gray, James Caldwell and Crispus Attucks (a mulatto), would die instantly, and two others, Samuel Maverick (the next day) and Patrick Carr (about a week later).
