What political reasons did president lincoln have for issuing the emancipation proclamation?

President Lincoln had many reasons for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.  One reason was to recruit freed slaves into the Union army.  This way they could fight for their freedom literally.  Another was to take from the South, their main source of manpower.
