After Britain gained Quebec and French lands from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi, the British needed to deal with the new lands. The Proclamation of 1763 declared lands beyond the Appalachians as Indian Territory and in 1774 the Quebec Act protected the French citizens. The Quebec Act allowed the French to continue practicing Catholicism, use french law for civil matters, and the governor of Quebec was put in charge of the Indian Territory.
