When the Europeans began to establish plantations (sugar and tobacco) and farms in America and Caribbean, they required labor to work in the fields. Planters in both the region could not bring profit without any productions.  In the beginning, indentured servants assigned to work in the plantations but it became expensive because it was part of contract system which allowed them to work for a certain period. Indentured servants later succeed by African slaves. They were seen as assets, bought and sold as a commodity. They forced to work in fields and torture as punishment.
