Though Jefferson was inspired by Enlightenment thinking, religion was still important to the daily lives of Americans and Europeans. The Enlightenment suggested rationale thinking toward government and influenced individualism but it did not refute the existence of God. Many Enlightenment thinkers believed God created the Earth and humans but did not interfere in the day to day lives of people.
