Okay, so, The Second Battle of Ypres was one of the first times that Canadian troops had fought European troops, and they had performed exceptionally well in truly horrific circumstances.
The Canadians had counterattacked German troops to close a gap opened in the Allied lines caused by the German use of poison gas, which was totally unexpected, and as such, the Allied troops, including the Canadians, had no protection from the gas more advanced than a urine-soaked cloth held over their mouths.
