"Scare" comes from the fact that many people were scared that communism would come to the United States. There were two Red Scare periods. The first occurred after World War I and the Russian Revolution. The second occurred during the Cold War after World War II. It was considered a threat with the Russian Revolution and the Chinese civil war during WW2 brought that threat to the forefront. Communism was always a threat to capitalist governments due to it being the exact opposite of what capitalism stands for Post Script.  McCarthy was a Republican senator from Wisconsin and was the leader behind the ethos of McCarthyism. McCarthy lost his power for being a crossdresser and back in the 50's, that was not socially acceptable.Nuclear weapon test, 1956, the destruction of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by American atomic weapons in August 1945 began an arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. This lasted until the signing of the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty of November 1990. The Australian Government's response to the threat of communism Communism has around since the 1950's and the spread of it was feared by many. Australia was particularly concerned that their country would become communist that the Government did all they could to prevent the spread, which will be highlighted in this presentation. Some of them committed suicide. Some left the US. Others changed their names to try and get around the blacklist. This was because the blacklist forced them out of their jobs and their homes. Many had great difficulty finding work and faced social ostracism as well.
