It was important because it was the first democratic legitimate and legal election of a president in Mali history. In Mali history there were a lot of issues varying from colonization to ruthless dictator rulers to revolutions and similar things, but then a transition period came and after it ended the 1992 election marked the first time Konare won the  first democratic, multi-party presidential election

It was the country's first fair and open election.
