One of the most important and difficult tasks that parents face is how to best support their children while also setting the kind of boundaries and structure that helps them grow up to become responsible and successful adults. Sure, children and teens love to test the boundaries that adults set for them. But it is important to make distinctions between instances where “kids are being kids” and when they’re asserting things about themselves that are critical to their identity and development -- as is the case with gender identity and expression.

Gender identity and expression are central to the way we see ourselves and engage in the world around us. This is certainly true of transgender and gender-expansive children and teens, for whom family support is absolutely critical.

Gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things. Being transgender is about an individual’s gender identity, while being gay is about an individual’s sexual orientation, which is our sexual or romantic attraction to people of the same gender, different genders, both or neither. While many children who go on to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual express gender-expansive behaviors, whether they are transgender is about identity rather than attraction. Everyone possesses both a gender identity and a sexual orientation; in other words, a transgender person can also identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual.

1: People who reach puberty before their peers experience changes in themselves. They don't see people around them doing the same and may feel self conscious or embarassed about themselves. Kids around them might look or treat them differently.
Kids who are transgender experience a wave of struggles. Dysphoria (a state of dissatisfaction with yourself and life),depression, and anxiety are often felt by these kids. They might struggle with not looking the way they believe they should and bullying. The kids who don't identify as straight, whether it be homosexual, bisexual, pansexual,etc., face bullying and harassment from other students. They might feel insecure and have anxiety about facing the people around them.
2: The kids who aren't respected because of their differences may have life long impacts on them. They might never feel accepted and could always carry the weight of anxiety and depression. They might feel as if everything has to conform and not be themselves.
3: The benefits of having society showing people with different orientations respect would be sky high. They would be more at peace with themselves and have the same rights as people who aren't queer. Many kids would have less anxiety and depression levels might come down. Everyone would feel like they belong in this world and that being who they are isn't 'weird.' Society would also be more open minded about different orientations and would be more likely to accept what isn't their 'norm.'
