Foraging to farming was a monumental moment in human history. Prior to farming, humans hunted and gathered for food, usually moving from place to place before learning how to farm and settle down. 

It has been beneficial because it provides a safer alternative then constantly moving around with the looming threat of dangers in new territories taking place. Hunting animals may be risky and involve the deaths of several members of a group of people.

It is detrimental because learning how to domesticate plants through farming means that we humans will settle down in one place. While this is safer, this translates to a less diverse food base, usually sticking with one or two of the same crops during harvest and not provide a wider selection of nutrients.

It also sets up a sense of privatization and land ownership. Where hunting and gathering was egalitarian with equal roles and sharing, farming creates a certain 'have and have not' situation, where others have lack to certain resources that others do have.
