Mateo reads about treatments once used for those with mental impairments. They were sent to doctors to have lobotomies or severing of the nerves in the frontal lobe of their brain. This was an attempt to make them more docile and easier to control. Mateo is shocked because these patients were not able to give informed consent. He believes it was wrong for the doctors to perform such serious brain surgery on patients who were not able to understand what was happening. Which value of ethical behavior does this reasoning support?
