You work with Kara at the local Boys and Girls club which is a program offered on the grounds of Chesterton High School. She is a very pretty 16 year old Latina female and she is a star swimmer on the girls' swim team. She gets straight A's in all of her classes and has a small social group. Her parents are going through a difficult divorce and she is being put in the middle by her father. According to Kara, it is very important to her father that she be "perfect" in everything. She has a job at a local pizza place and works there 2 evenings during the week plus the weekends. Her school counselor told you that rumor has been that Kara is not eating and is exercising excessively. The counselor talked with Kara but she denies not eating. She stated that she is exercising to get prepared for State swim championships. The counselor reports that Kara is 5'10" and weighs 110 lbs. You notice a gray pallor to Kara's skin and she has dark circles under her eyes. After reading the case study, determine what intervention you would make and why. Identify what additional information you want to find out from the client, others, records, etc. How would you obtain it? What would be the legal, ethical and/or confidentiality issues involved in obtaining this information? What personal struggles or prejudices of your own might you encounter while dealing with the case? Identify how this client may be similar or different from your own experiences. What might you need to watch for in yourself to avoid projecting your own assumptions, values, or opinions onto the client or family members?
