Right lower quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain, severe enough for emergency room (ER) presentation, is most indicative of acute appendicitis, which is a surgical emergency. It can occur in any aged person from young childhood to the elderly. It is important to surgically remove the inflamed cecal appendix, a vestigial worm-like organ hanging off of the first part of the colon, before rupture occurs. Appendiceal rupture can spread toxic bacteria throughout the abdominal cavity, possibly culminating in acute peritonitis, which carries a high mortality (death rate) with it.
