Case study Dev, 22 years old, has started cycling to college and going to the gym with his friend Brett, also 22 years old. Dev hasn't done any physical exercise since he left school 5
years ago. He says he feels unfit, overweight and unhealthy. He admires how fit and
healthy his friend Brett is. Dev says "I'm not sick or anything like that, but I'm not
healthy either. I want to be healthier" Brett doesn't drink alcohol, goes to the gym four
evenings a week to do weight training and cycles three miles to college every day. He
didn't have any days off sick from college last year and says "I'm healthy, I feel good,
happy, fit and strong right now."
1. Is Dev using a positive or negative approach to define health?
2. List three behaviours that contribute to Brett being 'healthy'.
3. Explain how Dev's health would benefit from increasing his levels of physical
activity.
