Many people feel motivated by competition and want to compete in several sports, beauty pageants, school clubs, etc. If there is no competition and/or awards for the person, they may not engage in the sport. The person participating in the sport, will set goals for themselves and achieve the goals just to beat others at the game.  

Many people will join a team sport so that they have a better chance of winning and beating the competitor. This is a good character builder for many young men and women, no matter the psychical activity they choose.
