Worldwide, about twice as many people eat a plant-based diet as eat a meat-based diet. A plant-based diet requires fewer resources to produce. It takes 28 calories of fossil-fuel energy to produce 1 calorie of protein from meat. In contrast, it takes only 3.3 calories of fossil-fuel energy to produce 1 calorie of protein from grain. With the population continuing to increase, some people believe it may be necessary to give up meat-based diets to ensure that there are enough resources to produce food for all people. Do you think that a plant-based or a meat-based diet is more nutritious, or are they both equally nutritious? Why does a plant-based diet require fewer resources to produce? Do you think people should eat less meat? Why or why not?
