No other country in the world has such unusual animals as Australia, especially the species called marsupials. The two most famous of these marsupials are the kangaroo and the cuddly koala. Each has a pouch in which to carry and nurse its young. In the "bush," or forest areas of Australia, both the koala, which is a protected species, and the kangaroo are flourishing again. Occasional road signs warn the driver of "kangaroo crossing" or "koala crossing."
