Models are useful in earth science for simplifying complex systems and problems.Models also ignore complicating factors that have a negligible effect on the system being study. For example, When determining the orbits of satellites the gravitational pull of the earth, moon and sun are considered, but the other planets are ignored even though their gravity does effect satellites, but it does so to a much smaller degree.This can be clearly explained in model and easy to understand.
