At 2:46 p. m., in Japan, on Friday, March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred below the ocean floor, at a depth of 18.6 miles under the ocean surface. The epicenter was located approximately 80 miles off Japan's eastern coast at the approximate coordinates of 38° N 142° E.
