The idea of plate tectonics is best described as

taking ur hands and putting them flat horizontally & then sliding them on top of one another.

Think of a waitress with a plate and how it slides on the tray because she is new to the job. It was fine when she  doesn’t have it on the tray and balancing it but, then she has a hard time when she tries to balance it an it causes a sliding effect.
